New Jersey Queens, The – Party And Don’t Worry Bout It

Magnet Records – Magnet 2 * 7″ * Vinyl * USA * 1973

Bird Rollins produced and self released in the same year as Blowflys – Funky In The Hole, so it remains unclear who inspired whom. The similarity is without a question beyond coincidence.

This record was introduced to my generation by Bill Shannon’s Baseline Records in 1989 and to a wider audience the following year by the influential compilation series Totally Wired on Acid Jazz Records, what made that tune having a huge influence in the Rare Groove culture.

Truth – Excedrin Headache #24

Sounds Of Cleveland – M 11711 P * Vinyl * 7″ * 45rpm* USA * 1976

this release including leo green and russell evans of the imperial wonders as well as larry hancock of s.o.u.l. is another case of great -and super cheap to find- mid 70’s “well well well” funk.

Charles Earland – Intergalactic Love Song

Mercury – 73793 * Styrene *  USA * 1976

the younger may only know the diddys vocal version, those veterans who still remember what hip house was maybe the sample from d.o.c. cj mackintosh remix of “portrait of a masterpiece” of charles earlands original trippy arp synth masterwork contained on the 1976 album “odyssey”

wich was -after the seminal “leaving this planet” album- the 2nd of earlands fusion output, followed by “the great pyramid” and “revelation”

Alvin Cash & The Crawlers – Twine Time

Mar-V-Lus Records – 6002 * Vinyl *  7″ * 45rpm * USA * Dec 1964

one of the first tracks that can be seen as proto funk music from 1964, alvin cash’s classic r&b teen dance tune twine time.
andre williams who produced that recording unfortunately did not pay too much attention for a decent sound at that time, still this one remains a landmark in the evolution of soul music.
always loved this pop art label design a lot!

Mind Readers – Bitter Tears

Village Sounds Records – 106 * Vinyl * 45rpm * USA * 1972

today a lovely crossover funk/ soul cheapo made in california, the 1972 mind readers on village sound records. looks like clarence satchell from the ohio players was involved in that project (who also was a part of the rare groove anthem “riding high” by faze-o)

Poets Of Rhythm – Funky Train

Hotpie & Candy – HCR 45-01 * Vinyl * 45rpm * Germany * 1992

the only recording where i ever actually played an instrument on. someone in the band obviously was -for understandable reasons!- not too convinced of my conga skills, and turned down my part to the minimum volume in the mixdown. eventually the little artefact where boris mentions my name is left on the recording remained, followed by this fine flute solo of wolfi schlick. something i’m still very proud of: to have been a tiny little part of an undoubtedly legendary band.
at least my design of the label logo remains until today.
